Ubuntu on an old PC

When you buy a new PC you are often left with the question – what to do with the old pc.

Well you probably upgraded because the old pc wasn’t running windows programs up to modern standards. The good news is there is an alternative to windows and it is called linux.

Linux is an operating system which has its basis in the academic community of computer scientists. Don’t let this put you off in recent years it has been gaining market share and has become even easier to use than windows. The major selling point is that it is free so you have nothing to lose in trying it.

Well this has always been the case but for me the killer feature is that it is immune from all the malware / viruses you get with windows – thats right immune. If you have kids which use msn or other social chat programs you will know how much rubbish gets installed – in fact this has been the major factor in me dumping the old PC.

The most popular distribution is ubuntu this for me has been a life saver. It is so easy to install and I know it will run smoothly on my old PC and be immune to all viruses. Ubuntu has a very helpful community and is actually easier to use and install than windows.

For anything apart from games ubuntu beats windows and will run on an older machine and you don’t need to buy any other piece of software. Before throwing away that old PC take a look at ubuntu - you will be pleasantly suprised!
