Selling or passing on a secondhand PC is a great way to generate extra money or save on buying someone a gift.
Perhaps the most important thing is dealing with any data left on the machine. Not only because you need this data but also because it may be personal data you do not wish strangers to see. The bast way to normally is to backup all data to a a blank dvd using a program such as nero or windows built in backup programs. You can google this topic to see the best methods.
The next step is to wipe the pc clean by reinstalling the operating system. This not only wipes your data completely it will restore your pc to a the same state you bought it in. With a good clean and a reinstall the PC is in a new state.
You can normally find a disk that came with the PC. If you set the boot options and follow the onscreen instructions. If you are unsure about any of this find someone in your local area – this is less than an hours work in most cases.

When you buy a new PC you are often left with the question – what to do with the old pc.
Well you probably upgraded because the old pc wasn’t running windows programs up to modern standards. The good news is there is an alternative to windows and it is called linux.
Linux is an operating system which has its basis in the academic community of computer scientists. Don’t let this put you off in recent years it has been gaining market share and has become even easier to use than windows. The major selling point is that it is free so you have nothing to lose in trying it.
Well this has always been the case but for me the killer feature is that it is immune from all the malware / viruses you get with windows – thats right immune. If you have kids which use msn or other social chat programs you will know how much rubbish gets installed – in fact this has been the major factor in me dumping the old PC.
The most popular distribution is ubuntu this for me has been a life saver. It is so easy to install and I know it will run smoothly on my old PC and be immune to all viruses. Ubuntu has a very helpful community and is actually easier to use and install than windows.
For anything apart from games ubuntu beats windows and will run on an older machine and you don’t need to buy any other piece of software. Before throwing away that old PC take a look at ubuntu - you will be pleasantly suprised!

How do I get started after I receive the Disk? Set your BIOS to from from disc, if its not already set.
How do I set BIOS to Disc? This will vary from computer to computer. Most computers show what the boot up key is right at start up…… in most computers its F2 or F8 or something… you repetitively hit that key to get you into the boot up screen. You can consult your BIOS manual for how to do it exactly for your PC.
Can I install it in more than one computer? Yes, you can install it in however many computers you want. You can even install it on your family’s or friends computers. No serial key is required.
Why is this so cheap? The software has been developed by the open source community. There aren’t any shareholders to please, so the savings can be passed directly on to the consumer.

I booted into the bios to see the configuration, so I know the machine works. You will get a random keyboard (could be black, could be white or beige) you also get a random mouse (could
be black, could be white or beige) Unit measures 13″x14.5″x4″. In the front the unit has microphone and headphone jacks, two USB plugs, CD and floppy drives.
